2013 Emmys

Well, I watched the Emmys last night (9/22/13).  I adore award shows and have been looking forward to the Emmy ceremony for weeks.  Unfortunately, it was an uneven presentation that was actually boring during large swaths of time.  I’ve become a recent fan of Breaking Bad and was really hoping that all of the actors from the show who were nominated would win.  I definitely thought Bryan Cranston winning was a slamdunk.  Nope, Jeff Daniels won instead for his work on The Newsroom.  At least Breaking Bad’s Anna Gunn won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.  And the show did win for Outstanding Drama Series.  Sadly, I had my Tivo set to record a different show at 10:15pm so I did not even get to see the acceptance speech for the Drama Series award.  It was the final Emmy presented last night and I only got to hear Will Ferrell announce the win before my channel was unceremoniously changed.  Disappointed!

I didn’t predict many of the winners which is unlike me.  I almost always win office pools for award shows.  I use my trusty Entertainment Weekly to help make my predictions.  EW is usually 66% accurate with guesses about who will win.  Not this time.  Not even close.  Miffed!  I was not entered into any office pool, but I was disappointed that EW was so wrong.  To be fair, even host Neil Patrick Harris announced that no one would be winning Emmy office pools based on the number of surprising wins.  I really wanted Kerry Washington of Scandal to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series even though I’ve never seen the show.  She would have been the first African American woman to win in her nominated category.  Instead, Claire Danes won again for Homeland.  Don’t get me wrong – I loooooove Homeland and like to see it rewarded.  And Claire is fantastic in her role.  But, Kerry winning would have been a historical moment and elicited many tears from me (and I believe from a lot of others across this country and around the world).  Proud tears of “it’s about damn time!”
